Leadership in SustainabilityI am working with the Hanover College Sustainability Council, where I'm updating the Hanover College Sustainability website by adding new accomplishments and sustainability standards. I'm also managing and creating content for the HC Sustainability Instagram and Facebook accounts, as well as taking photos for EcoReps, Hanover Composting, and Sustainability Council events.
As Alpha Delta Pi’s Director of Public Relations, I have been able to demonstrate and strengthen my skills in public relations, and through this opportunity, I hope to continue developing those skills while supporting sustainability initiatives on campus.
My journey has been supported by friends, Career Peer Mentors, the Levett Career Center staff, professors, and online research. I learned about this opportunity through a professor’s recommendation and would like to thank Kate Johnson, my employer, and Rachel Davidson, my faculty supervisor. Both recognized my potential and believed in my ability to succeed in this position, and they inspire me to be better every day.

Telling a Hotel's StoryDuring my internship at the Madison Fairfield Inn & Suites – Historic Eagle Cotton Mill, I created digital content, managed social media, produced photo and video materials, handled communications, and designed marketing pieces that highlighted the hotel’s historic character. I also developed a 360-degree virtual tour website as part of a strategic project for the sales team, which challenged me to balance creativity with Marriott brand guidelines and adapt to the fast pace of real hotel operations.
I discovered this opportunity through Taylor Shaw at the Levett Career Center, who connected me to the Good Neighbor Internship Program, and I also received invaluable support from Misty Jacobs, who shared insight about my strengths with the Fairfield team. Preparing for the role involved updating my résumé, assembling a portfolio of design work, and practicing interviews with Katy Lowe Schneider. Spending the summer working in downtown Madison allowed me to build meaningful connections with local businesses and better understand how hospitality, tourism, and marketing intersect within a community.
My coursework and hands-on experiences at Hanover—especially Dr. Rachel Davidson’s Cross-Cultural Communication micro-internship—equipped me with the communication, design, and analytical skills that made this internship both successful and impactful.

Building Confidence as a CoachI interned at Alex Makin Performance, a local fitness facility in Madison, Indiana, where I served as an Assistant Personal Trainer and Strength & Conditioning Coach. In this role, I helped design and lead individualized and small group training sessions, taught proper exercise technique, monitored client progress, and assisted with strength and conditioning programming. I also supported daily facility operations, communicated with coworkers about goals and expectations, and learned to adapt workouts in real time based on performance and safety needs.
I discovered the internship through networking and my interest in gaining hands-on experience in personal training. Throughout the experience, I developed stronger communication skills, greater confidence in coaching technique, and a deeper understanding of program design for different fitness levels. I also learned how to work with clients and adjust training sessions as needed, which supports my goal of becoming a certified personal trainer or coach and prepares me for future roles in fitness coaching and strength and conditioning.
I was encouraged and supported by my professors and friends as I pursued this opportunity in a new community. I prepared for the application by updating my resume, highlighting relevant coursework and training experience, and practicing how to clearly communicate my goals and strengths in the field. My Health & Movement Studies coursework at Hanover College provided a strong foundation in exercise science, biomechanics, and program design, and the hands-on labs and class discussions helped me feel confident stepping into a coaching role.

Hands-On Experience in Patient CareDuring my Summer 2025 internship at Aperion Care in Hanover, Indiana, I served as a Social Services Intern and gained extensive hands-on experience that contributed to my acceptance into medical school. I administered mental and cognitive assessments to residents, documented results in their online medical records, developed and presented care plans, and collaborated closely with the facility’s psychologist and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. I also monitored residents’ cognitive changes to support their ongoing treatment.
I discovered the opportunity through Levett Career Center staff member Taylor Shaw, whose guidance, along with résumé support from the Career Center, was instrumental in helping me secure the role. Growing as a Designer and MarketerDuring my summer internship at Grote Industries, I worked as a Marketing Intern and was welcomed immediately into a supportive, collaborative environment where my mentors helped strengthen my design skills and critical thinking. In this role, I photographed a wide range of products and company events—including the new downtown weathervane—edited and cleaned up images for various uses, created social posts and blogs for new products, designed event logos, and developed a customer tour board to enhance the visitor experience.
I discovered the opportunity through my mom, who had previously worked on Grote’s marketing team, and she encouraged me to pursue it. Some of my biggest takeaways included learning to confidently accept feedback, ask questions, understand clients’ needs clearly, and build meaningful professional connections both inside and outside of the company.
To apply, I worked with Taylor Shaw and the Levett Career Center to refine my résumé and prepare my materials before submitting them to Grote. Hanover College also played a key role by keeping me informed about relevant opportunities and providing consistent support whenever I needed guidance, which helped me feel prepared and confident stepping into this role.

Inside the Sports Marketing WorldDuring my internship with Priority Sports and Entertainment, I served as a Sports Marketing Intern, where I handled daily social media news alerts across the NBA, NFL, and international basketball, created player bios and Canva profiles, managed NIL and client lists, conducted brand research and outreach, and supported both the WBB Launch and NBA Training Camp preparations.
I discovered the opportunity through a longtime family friend who serves as the company’s Executive VP of Athlete Marketing, and after connecting with her, I received additional guidance from the Levett Career Center’s Jenny Moss and Taylor Shaw as I navigated the application process.
Throughout the internship, I strengthened my professional discipline, soft skills, and initiative—learning the importance of doing the little things, volunteering for tasks, building strong coworker relationships, and consistently working hard. The experience not only confirmed much of what my professors taught about the realities of the sports industry, but also expanded my network in ways that will open doors for future roles, including an invitation to return in April to support pre-draft events for WNBA and NBA athletes.
To prepare, I refined my résumé, leveraged connections within the company, and completed several rounds of interviews that helped me grow more confident each time. My Hanover professors played a key role in equipping me for this opportunity, offering insight and advice drawn from their own industry experience that I was able to apply directly to my work.

Learning to Think Like an EngineerDuring my internship at Consolidated Asset Management Services (CAMS). I worked with the Asset Performance Management (APM) engineering team, supporting two engineers with their daily workload. My work involved using engineering software, analyzing performance data, and learning about power plant systems and maintenance strategies used to prevent failures and improve reliability.
I discovered this opportunity through my former professor, Dr. Phillips, who recommended me for the position after working with CAMS' APM team in the past. While my dad encouraged me to pursue an internship, I actively searched for opportunities and relied heavily on Dr. Phillips' guidance throughout the process and beyond.
The most valuable part of the experience was working alongside professional engineers in a real-world setting. Observing how they approach problems, communicate, and make decisions helped me better understand industry expectations and pushed me to become more proactive, detail-oriented, and confident. These skills will support my future career in engineering.
I prepared for the role by refining my resume with peer mentors, seeking advice from professors and friends, and using AI tools to help with resume writing, cover letters, and interview preparation. Finding My First Destination JobI'm working for Martinrea International as a Process Engineer. I found this position through Professor Brooks who had a connection and recommended me for this position.
In choosing the engineering field, my father, Benjamin Combs, played a huge role in my decision. I would also like to give shout-outs to both of my engineering professors for helping me through my entire college career. Professors Brooks and Professor Phillips were huge inspirations and brought passion into their teaching. They made everything super understandable and made classes more than just about grades. Honestly, I don't think I would have made it through my engineering major if they were not my professors.
The engineering major at Hanover helped prepare me for this position. It taught me all the fundamental aspects of what an engineer is and then delved deeper into specific subjects such as thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. Additionally, with Hanover's focus on liberal arts, I developed more soft skills that engineering students at other universities may not have, such as effectively communicating, and being more well-rounded. And, through Hanover, I gained two years of internship experience during my college career, which helped me secure a very high starting salary and allowed me to stand out above the competition.
My advice to those searching for their first job is to never let yourself feel defeated. I had been applying for jobs for months and faced rejection after rejection, or employers did not want to wait until my graduation date. Eventually, after continuously applying to jobs, I finally had multiple offers and opportunities to choose from. It may seem like no one wants you at first, but if you keep trying, you will find a multitude of companies wanting your skills and mindset. Adam Combs '24

My Path to Law SchoolI earned a scholarship to attend law school. I'm studying immigration law which I discovered through the help of Professor Bill Kubik. He connected me to an internship at Russell Immigration Law. I'm extraordinarily grateful for his assistance, as my internship showed me what the practice of law looks like day-to-day. The liberal arts community at Hanover has supported me and allowed me to prepare for my future in ways I didn't know were possible. The program provided unique opportunities for one-on-one connection with professors and advisors in several disciplines. Margaret Krantz [Levett Career Center] helped me to prepare for the LSAT and proofread my documents before I submitted them to law schools. Hanover's liberal arts program allowed me to study the Spanish language. Uschi Appelt [Study Abroad] helped me earn a scholarship to study Spanish in Mexico. Professora Alejandra Rodriguez-Villar encouraged me to continue in Spanish. Professor Murphy's ingenuity and creativity helped me to combine two of my passions, genealogy, and military history, into a thesis I genuinely had so much fun writing. I was able to find joy in learning through his classes. When I first came to Hanover, I was concerned about having enough time to maintain strong academics while staying a part of the community. I now realize academics and co-curricular activities are inseparable. I'm a former member and social media coordinator for the Hanover Women's Swim Team, as well as a student worker for the IT Department. I am a founding member of the Beekeeping Club and engage in Greek Life through Alpha Delta Pi. I frequently take advantage of the woods surrounding the school and hike the trails during my free time. Hanover's co-curricular activities have supported my academics. I found a community through my activities at Hanover, one that will cheer on my successes in and out of my clubs. Hanover truly is one-of-a-kind. I have received so many unique opportunities and formed countless connections. While I am excited to attend law school, I'll be sad to leave this place I have called home behind. History major

Taking the LeapMy name is Mya Urba and I will be attending Ball State University to pursue my Doctorate of Audiology.
Hanover College's liberal arts education prepared me for this next step by allowing me to be a team leader in many aspects of life. Being at a liberal arts college allowed me to take a variety of different courses from my biology courses to sociology. These courses helped me as a person to be well-versed in these areas. Hanover has also allowed me to be involved in lots of different activities from being a Resident Assistant to being a football coach, which has given me numerous opportunities to lead and grow as a leader.
To my peers, I would say take the leap to try an advanced degree. As a first-generation college student, it was a huge step for me to do undergrad, so I never thought I would continue to more school, but I took that leap anyway. It is always worth it to at least apply and see where life takes you! To those just beginning your college career, take your work seriously but don't take yourself so seriously. Enjoy your time because you only get these experiences once. Love your friends, smile often, and give your best work! Communication is key and can also make a world of difference.

Partnering for Career ReadinessI partner with the Levett Career Center to help my students understand the practical relevance of their coursework. My goal is for them to finish each class one step closer to career readiness. Through this collaboration, my students have honed their interview skills, networked with alumni and community professionals, developed marketing plans for real organizations, and even secured job offers post-graduation.

Aiming for Success The LCC has been a great resource for us in talking with our players about resume skills, interviewing skills, and just overall with ways to think about making new contacts and building their networks.Beyond individual and team success on the basketball court, which I believe looks great on a resume, I hope that each of our players will develop the skill set needed to truly function like a professional in today's world. I hope they have gained knowledge and critical thinking skills from their academic coursework at HC, that our basketball program has emphasized and held them accountable in areas such as reliability, organization, determination, and teamwork; and that they also have become proactive in looking to utilize resources available to them such as the LCC. All of our players are investing in themselves by being a student at Hanover and I hope every one of them can find a great return on that investment.
Playing an active role in connecting our players to the LCC has been great. It has exposed them to many of the real-world realities and skills that are so incredibly important in not only creating opportunities for themselves but also in being prepared to take advantage of those opportunities when they arrive.
