Networking 101 Workshop: How to and Practice

This workshop provided hands-on, practical tips for adept, productive relationship building at a network event. It also prepared students for the actual networking event held at the end of the day.

*Elevator Pitch Workshop

After a brief introduction to crafting an elevator pitch, you will listen to alumni give their elevator pitches, then craft one of your own and practice that pitch with alumni. Alumni will listen and coach you on your pitch. You will rotate around the room to practice with each alumnus.

During this session, you will:

• Receive a brief introduction describing how to craft an elevator pitch.
• Hear examples of alumni giving their pitches.
• Develop your own pitch with guidence.
• Practice your pitch on alumni.

A network is a set of relationships built from honesty, sincerity, and mutuality that are important to achieving your career goals.  In this session, you will learn how to connect and interact with mentors (beyond a networking event), who can help you reach your career goal. 

Topics include:

• Define networking and understand its importance.
• Build an effective, high performance network - strategically.
• Request advice, leads, information.
• Maintain Contacts.

Five successful 2016 Alumni Award winners give advice on achieving success when you commence your life after Hanover. Topics include:

What does success look like?

• How soon can I expect to be successful?
• What if I fail?
• Setting oneself up for success.
• How a Hanover education prepares you for success.

Mini - Mentoring with an Alumni

Alumni meet one-on-one with you in a casual setting to answer questions, give advice and suggestions on transitioning from Hanover to your first job.

Possible topics to discuss with an alum are:

• I have no career goal or only a vague one, what do I do?
• I have a career goal, what do I do next?
• Did you have a career goal by senior year?
• Did your career path go as you expected?
• Where do I look for open jobs?
• What strategies should I use to find my first job after college?
• What if I don't like my first job, what do I do?
• What can I do now to increase my chances of finding employment after college?

LinkedIn is a valuable tool as you enter and navigate the professional world.  It gives you access to people and job-related information that is invaluable in your search.  In this workshop you will learn how you can benefit from using this valuable tool. Topics will include key components and strategies of using LinkedIn including:

• Improving your Profile to showcase your unique strengths, skills, and goals
• Connecting with your network: who and how?
• Searching for a Job or Internship
• Taking advantage of LinkedIn tools
• Understanding LinkedIn etiquette

This session is a great opportunity to connect with alumni and discuss career questions in a supportive environment.
